Small room doesn’t mean cramped, crowded, cluttered and hopeless. You can transform the smallest of rooms into a place with some space to spare. Decorating carefully and using the right decors can change how a small room looks.

The first step is to clean and organize. Doing away with things you don’t need can clear up a lot of space. You can keep your papers, books, CDs and other stuff inside a box or compartment from a multi-purpose ottoman or table, then take away the cabinet, racks, shelf or whatever it is that’s eating up some legroom. An option is to have a built-in shelf that doesn’t take space on the floor. It’s time to clean the clutter and start anew with useful things and bigger space.

Next, take a moment to evaluate your room’s storage systems. Every inch of a small room should be used for storage so you may need to buy some new, multipurpose pieces. Look for furniture that has storage capabilities, such as benches or ottomans with storage space underneath. Look for a small entertainment center with lots of space inside to hide books, movies, and cds. You could even take advantage of a sofa that has a few inches of space underneath to store long, flat plastic containers. Make sure you have the storage you need to make your small room stay organized and uncluttered.

The next step is to use smaller, thinner furnishings. In addition to a slim sofa, a slim coffee table, side table or small dresser will do the trick. If you can make do without some, then you are allowing for more legroom in your place.

Choosing the right color can also make your room appear bigger. Solid and light colors are the best. They look simple, straightforward and clean making the room visually uncluttered. Light colors also reflect light, which makes the room more airy and refreshing. If monochromatic fashion, that is wearing clothes with the same color, can make you look slimmer and taller, then so do tone on tone furnishings can make the room look larger. It gives it more space. You can use curtains or blinds with the same wall color to make the windows bigger or longer. Try not to let the curtains reach all the way down to the floor. Leaving a few inches off the floor, the windows will also look larger and the space bigger.

Putting mirrors in the room is a surefire space enlarging technique. Mirrors reflect light thus, make the room look bigger. You can hang a nice mirror on the wall, closet doors or dresser.

If there’s one decorative item that you shouldn’t do without even with a small space, it should be area rugs. There are small sizes perfect for smaller areas, but those that look quite big (without overwhelming the room or eating up too much space) can actually make the room look bigger, whereas too small ones can give off a smaller look. Lighter tones too help in enlarging the floor. There are also designs with vertical and horizontal patterns that can also be used to elongate the room.
