You might be surprised to see the words health food in the same sentence as the words fast food and maybe you thought fast food is the ultimate sin unless you are trying to gain weight. It is possible however to include fast food in your diet, even if you are trying to eat more healthily or lose a few pounds.

That is not to say that you should stuff yourself full of fast food three times a day but the occasional treat is fine, whether it is juicy, succulent southern fried chicken or a cheeseburger and fries. Now that more people are aware of healthy eating, fast food restaurants are also offering healthier choices and nutritious side dishes as well as the traditional fast food fare.

Choose Your Food Carefully

One in four Americans will eat fast food every day and many fast food options give you enough fat, sodium, and calories to make up your entire daily requirement. Also, a lot of people are fairly unknowledgeable about nutrition and do not choose their meal well. You might think that a salad is a healthy option but some salads contain fried meat, deep-fried croutons, and a creamy, high fat dressing which makes it comparable in calories to a cheeseburger.

There is only one way to know exactly what you are eating and that is to make your own food. You might not be a seasoned chef but there are many easy recipes out there, a lot, of which you can make from start to finish in less than twenty minutes.

Making Fried Chicken the Healthy Way

Fried chicken, for example, is a food that many people love. If you have some chicken pieces, flour, batter, oil and a deep fat fryer you can make your own in minutes. You can also make the right amount of fried chicken. In a fast food restaurant, you often get a large portion by default and feel like you have to finish every last morsel, to avoid wasting food.

If you make fried chicken at home, you can satisfy your fast food cravings without visiting a fast food restaurant to order a huge portion of food, which comes with fries and a large thick shake.

If you want to lose a few pounds, perhaps you might like to know about oven-fried chicken. This is basically a baked chicken recipe in a crispy batter. It actually tastes just like fried chicken but without all the fat and calories. Actually, some people prefer oven-fried chicken to deep fried chicken.

Whether you want to indulge your craving for deep fried chicken once a week or make healthy oven fried chicken recipes instead, you can incorporate fried chicken as part of a healthy diet, as long as you practice moderation and eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and other foods too.

A little of what you fancy does you good, as they say, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying fried chicken occasionally if your diet is balanced overall. If you serve your homemade fried chicken with mashed potatoes, green beans and corn on the cob, you will have a nutritious meal, which tastes great.
