The majority of motorcycle riders always wear their helmets. But many choose not to wear a helmet during their rides. Is it safe to ride without a helmet? Should you always wear a motorcycle helmet?
What are the reasons that someone wouldn’t wear a helmet, a piece of gear designed for protection? Some cannot afford a helmet. Where it isn’t required, others argue they don’t want to, that they like the freedom.
There are also always stories circulating around motorcycle riders or someone who was injured or killed because of their helmet, much like those about seat belts. They therefore argue they’re safer without one.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. When riding a motorcycle, the best way to protect yourself is by wearing a motorcycle helmet. Studies have shown that helmets drastically reduce motorcycle related fatalities and injuries.
Many motorcyclists live by the idea that a rider has either been in an accident, or will eventually be in one. This is because motorcyclists can be difficult to see, and a motorcycle is more prone than other vehicles to certain types of accidents.
This is the reason why you should always wear a motorcycle helmet, even for short rides. They are specially designed to protect your head and your neck from injury, and can be invaluable if you are involved in an accident.
Something to keep in mind is to never buy a helmet used. It can be impossible to tell if the helmet was ever dropped or worn in a crash, and either situation will render the helmet worthless and unable to protect you.
For those riders that still choose not to wear a motorcycle helmet, they may be in for a surprise. Many areas require motorcyclists and their passengers to wear them, and you can be ticketed and fined for failing to comply.
