If you are the owner of a new puppy, best wishes to you! You can expect to enjoy yourself but it can be discouraging at the same time. At one moment, you are grinning at him for being so adorable, but the next moment, you want to yell at him because he broke something in your home. So when it concerns training your puppy, the quicker you accomplish this, it will be better for you.

Although it’s definitely important to begin training with your puppy while it’s still young, you must remember that you are also in training. Your puppy is in a completely new situation, learning how to navigate a strange home and get along with unfamiliar people. It won’t happen right away.

The first portion of the puppy training should concentrate on limits. What is the puppy allowed to do? Where can it go? These are the things that have to be answered, and the best way to do it is to watch him. See where he goes when indoors. If he ventures into a closet, be prepared to firmly say “NO”. The dog will soon recognize the tone in your voice, and associate it with his location in the house. This tells the puppy that the closet is off limits.

It is essential that you walk your dog outside often. Walking gives the dog the opportunity for exploration and training: having a leash on the dog limits his wandering while stimulating his senses, and the dog will learn that outside is the proper place to relieve itself. Giving your dog a small treat after doing an appropriate action will help enforce proper behavior.

One of the most frustrating things for new dog owners is when the dog will just not stop barking. You just want peace and quiet, but the dog on the other hand couldn’t care less, right? Well - it’s not like the dog is barking on purpose just to upset you. You’ve got to start becoming more aware of the “dog’s barking trends”.

Try really paying attention to the details. What is the cause? Is it something obvious which is attributing to the barking, or is it something subtle? Often a dog will bark when it sees someone it doesn’t really know. Dogs are naturally territorial, and will bark at a person, as if to say “back off”.

The real solution to make your dog quit barking is to just be ready. Be aware of the reason why he barks and do something about it before he begins to bark. For example if a dog barks when he sees the mailman, be ready for this. You should know the time that the mailman brings the mail each day. When it is almost time for the mailman to come, tie your dog with a leash. When you notice the mailman pull on the dog’s leash before he has the opportunity to bark. It is a good jolt to his system.

It is very good, to use a water pistol when you are outdoors. If you are aware of what makes your dogs bark, spray him with water before he has the opportunity to bark. He will quickly realize that there is punishment for his barking. But, this won’t work if you don’t give him a treat when he doesn’t bark. Dogs must have good and bad reinforcement.
