It often seems that as time goes by a computer loses a significant amount of its original speed. Sometimes this lost speed is thought to be a normal part of computer aging but this is usually not the case. It takes a long time for a PC’s parts to become old enough for their aging to affect the way the computer will perform.

This article will attempt to take the mystery out of what computer slow downs are all about and then we’ll discuss how to fix the computer that has become slow and prevent it from acting up in the future.

What Makes Up Our Computer’s Resources?

We often think in terms of putting more RAM into our computers in order to get them to go faster. This, of course, is a good way to improve a computer’s speed after we have given it more demands by installing new software or hardware. However, if a computer has become slow for no apparent reason, more RAM is usually not going to help because in this case, something else has happened to cause the computer to slow down.

What Has Slowed Our Computer Down?

When a computer is suffering from poor performance and slow speed, you can bet there is something that has entered into our computer and is working inside without our approval and is taking our computer’s speed away.

The culprit usually causing this type of computer slowdown is malware. The word malware is a contraction of the words malicious and software. Malware can be any type of computer virus or spyware. These things have the ability to steal a computer’s resources and slow it down to the point it can be difficult to use.

Actually, it is not really all that important to know exactly what kinds of malware, be they viruses or spyware, have infected your computer. However, using a good spyware cleaner regularly is important. There are cleaner software programs that take care of cleaning out both spyware and viruses from your computer. So, you don’t need to deal with separate virus and spyware cleaners. However, you do need to clean out all parasites or you may end up having your computer shut down on you and you may have your identity stolen all at the same time!

About the Computer Registry

Equally as important as keeping our computers free of viruses and spyware are keeping our computers free of registry corruption. A computer doesn’t need to be abused in any way to develop registry corruption. Normal use will leave false entries in our registries and these false entries will give our operating systems stumbling blocks it must find a way to work around. This, of course, will cause our computers to slow down and become unstable. These stumbling blocks are what are known as registry corruption and it has to be cleaned out periodically or our computers will not operate at a level that is anywhere close to their potential.

It is also important to take note computer programs can be running in the background without your knowledge. This can happen because when software is installed one of the default options will usually be to allow the program to start automatically when you boot up the computer. Of course, running programs you are not using is a waste of resources. You can find the icon for these types of programs in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Right click any you find and choose the option to close the program. If you ever change your mind and want to run the program, you can do so the same as you would start any other program.

Still, it is most important to make sure you are free from spyware, viruses and registry corruption. If you do, your computer will likely continue to race down the information highway like it did the first day you used it.
