Fashion is always a hot topic. People from France to England to the U.S. and beyond eagerly await the newest trends and styles. It is fun to see fashion shows or peruse fashion magazines. Every season brings new fashion ideas and styles.

As a sewer, you have a very special opportunity to create your own amazing fashion statement. Not only are you able to imitate the current trends keeping your sewing projects current and timely; you can create your own special twist on current trends. You have all the power and control in your own sewing room. Choose the styles you like. Make it simple, elegant, or flashy. Make it practical, or express your wildest dreams.

Fashion changes so fast it can be dizzying. Every season brings fresh new styles. Magazines, shows, and advertizing put a spotlight on the new trends, but as fast as the new comes, the old fades away. Hmmm, how long has it been since your saw a double knit leisure suit?

So what fashions can we expect for the new year? Scan through the pages of your favorite fashion magazine and see what is there. What do you like or dislike? It seems to me there are many interesting revivals of past styles applied is slightly new ways. Fashion often revives styles from the past with just a slight twist. You can too.

The hottest fashion trends can be yours. Pick and choose the styles you really like, because you can make them your own. Examine how the items are made, and imitate or create.

You might think to yourself, I need a new pattern and it is so hard to fit a new pattern. Or you might imagine resurrecting some of those old patterns and using the parts that fit your new design. You might even consider investing in design software like Dressmaker or Berninas new My Design. You may take a class to learn how to create your own designs or fine tune fitting.

Just imagine all the fashion ingredients you could generate from your own sewing room. If you see something intriguing in a magazine, sew it up yourself. You are limited only by your minds eye. You can take standard items and make minor changes to create brand new effects. Change a collar, a sleeve, a cuff, or embellish with embroidery or appliqu. You could make your own glamour dress, jacket, suit, blouse, or accessory.

You may not be a famous French fashion designer, but you could create your own exciting fashion styles. Think of all the different things you could make. The possibilities are endless. You can start from scratch. You could imitate something you see. You could take a stock item and embellish it. The new fashion styles can be what you make them.

Do you like doing things from scratch? Or do you prefer quick and easy enhancements to standard items? The choice is yours. You could create your own patterns or buy a pattern. You could select the fabrics and layout the project from scratch, or you could take a ready to wear item and transform it. Today you have so many options. You have all kinds of tools and materials available. Decorative threads, sparkles, appliqu, embroidery, and much more are available for you to use.

Recycling is a popular theme today. By recycling what we find in our closet, we can create some amazing new styles. Take a visit to your closet. Look with a designers eye. What if you changed this on that? What if you added this to that? Just think a few minor alterations, enhancements, or embellishments could transform an old drab closet item into your latest style. Become the envy of your fashion world. Create. Remake.

What about color? The department stores cycle through different colors and styles based on what they think will sell. One year I wanted to buy a light green dress, but found the stores were in a blue cycle. There were no green dresses. But, I sew. So, I quickly put together my own fashion green. Now I didnt, but I could have even died my own fabric if I had wanted to. Color make a big difference. A touch here or there changes everything.

For me, sewing offers me my own little world. When I sew, if feel relaxed and at peace. I get so many creative ideas, I run out of time. Nothing makes me feel better than to have people complement my sewing. When it comes to fashion, I am in charge. I can create my own styles using the colors, textures, and designs I prefer. Sewing is a wonderful experience.

The next time you visit a department store, look at the items with a new perspective. Look at how the item is made and the fabrics used. Consider how easy it would be for you to make the same item. Then check the price tag. You know, you could make that item usually or half or less. Of course, if their item is 70% off, because it has been on the rack for year it might be work. But dont you deserve the best, especially if you can sew it yourself?

Unlike the cast iron workhorses of ages past, the modern sewing machine is fun and easy to use. It has so many convenience features and sews so smoothly, that sewing our own styles is a pleasure. The satisfaction we gain cannot be measured. The supports and resources available to help us create and produce our own styles make it easier than ever. So, lets do it. Lets create. Lets sew our own styles.
