In preparation for your move, you should go through the following checklist to make sure you havent overlooked anything important that could cause problems for you later.

Utilities: Have you arranged to have the utilities turned on at your new house? Have you stopped all utilities at the old house, taken final meter readings, and informed the utility companies of your move so that they can adjust your final bill and have it forwarded to your new address?

Services: Have you notified your bank, mobile phone and Internet service providers of your new address? Do you regularly contract a gardener, maid service or other third-party service that you need to cancel? Have you arranged to have your mail forwarded?

Security Deposits: Be sure you know exactly what is expected of you in order to have your security deposit fully refunded. If any repairs or cleaning have been scheduled but not yet completed, be sure to let the homeowner know when to expect their completion, and make plans to follow up on them.

Documents: Have you transferred important documents such as your driver’s license, visa, passport or work permit to your new address? Your homes new occupants will also appreciate it if you leave out any manuals for appliances or other items you’re leaving behind.

Final Walkthrough: All rooms should be clean and empty of everything except the items that are staying and the boxes containing the items you were using up until the last minute. Turn off all but one light indoors and an exterior light, for safety reasons. Make sure all the doors and windows are securely locked.

Once you’re sure you’ve taken care of everything on your list, you can move on to your new house knowing that you’re starting your new life without fear of disruption, identity theft, or the need to contact the new occupants of the house with any problems. You’ll also be able to relax and enjoy the move itself.
