The Internet is great, it offers a wonderful opportunity to improve your knowledge and capabilities, but it is always the safest place to hang out. Security is a prime important thing to think about when running your computer. Especially on the Internet. I have put together this guide for you to make life easier on your PC. This doesn’t mean that your computer will run perfect but it will probably run a lot better than if it didn’t have the software on it. Safety first.
1. Firefox - a web browser for the ages. Okay, a web browser that beats Internet Explorer by preventing pop ups and harmful scripts from being downloaded to your computer. Lots of nifty features too, including tabbed browsing, live bookmarks, and tons of add-on features.
2. Spybot - Spybot software gets rid of adware, spyware, and other junkware. It blocks the installation of spyware that can do harm to your computer before it is allowed to be installed. It is not a replacement for antivirus software. It’s just a way to make your overall computer more secure. Every little bit that helps.
3. AVG Antvirus - AVG offers basic antivirus protection. This is not the best virus protection program out there, but it is very good. For the price it might be the best. If nothing else, if you’re in a pinch and you think you have a virus. They can help you out of a jam and get your computer cleaned up.
4. Zone Alarm - if you don’t have a firewall installed on your computer, you are opening yourself up to potential catastrophic security breaches. With Stealth Mode enabled you can search the internet in private, away from the intruding eyes of those who might want to steal your important information.
5. Notepad++ - the notepad that comes with your computer does read text files, but that’s about all it does. If you are a programmer or even someone who just wants to get more out of your notepad text editor, Notepad++ is for you.
6. OpenOffice.org - opening Word documents or PowerPoint presentations is an absolute necessity. Working with Microsoft Office documents no longer meanst that you have to buy a copy of Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org works with all of the popular Microsoft formats as well as the newly popular Open Document formats. It is also completely free. It is great for kids who need to write papers for school, or business is on a tight budget.
It is also important to remember that while you can pay for software. You don’t always have to. There are many fantastic free programs available that can solve many of the problems that need to be solved on your computer. That being said, sometimes the paid version is the best version and is most certainly worth the money.
