If you’re looking to finally upgrade to a flat panel TV, you’ll find out that there are a lot of different options out there. You have LCD and Plasma flat panels, CRT TV’s, rear projection and front projection options.
Each type of TV has its pro’s and con’s. There are many differences in their features and specifications as well as their price tags. If you’re in the market for such an expensive, big ticket item, you should learn the difference between plasma and LCD.
Although you may see a lot of Plasma and LCD TV’s at your local electronics store, it is a fact that more companies build LCD TV’s than Plasma. There are a few reasons for this but in general, LCD TV’s are more popular than Plasma for a few different reasons.
One of the advantages of LCD TV’s are their glare-resistant screen. Plasma TV’s have a glossy screen that can make it difficult to see if you have a brightly lit room due to windows or overhead lighting. The matte finish of LCD screens make them a better option if you’re using the TV in a living room or kitchen.
A lesser down disadvantage of Plasma TV’s is their power consumption. A plasma TV requires much more energy than most LCD TV’s of a similar size. The cost of ownership increases and so will your monthly electricity bill.
There are still reasons to buy a plasma TV though. The general picture quality of a plasma TV is better than LCD. Colors and black levels on Plasma HDTV’s are much better and there is usually less screen blur on fast action sequences in sports or movies.
We mentioned previously that Plasma HDTV’s sometimes have an issue with light reflecting off of the screen. This is only a problem depending on where you put the television. If your TV will be in the basement in your theater room, a Plasma is a perfect option.
These are just a few of the basic differences between LCD and Plasma TV’s. Each type of TV has its place and is different for every person and home. In general, LCD is usually the best option but for true videophiles, you may need a Plasma TV.
