I know you are not thinking about it right now, but soon enough the lawn is going to emerge from under the snow and the weeds are gonna pop. Do you think you can handle it?

I have to figure that most of you are going to wait until the last minute to figure out what you are going to do with the grass this season. But you need to be ready to get out and put down the lawn treatments to make the lawn grow properly and keep out the nasty weeds. These tips should help you start your plan of action for this year.

The primary thing to think about is the type and kind of fertilizer you plan to put down. When I say that, I mean that you will need to figure out the makeup of the elements. I really don’t like the super high nitrogen dosed fertilizers as they offer very little to the lawn outside of a growth spurt. You really should try to find a fert that has some phosphorus and potassium as well.

You definitely want to think about using organic lawn fertilizers in the summer time. They are heat activated and slow release, which will prevent any type of burning. I also like organics in the lawn because they are extremely slow release which means they release nutrients over a long long period of time and that is what we are looking for!

Next comes the weed control. You are going to get weeds and you need to kill them. If you don’t, they will spread to your neighbors and that is a bad situation! I never recommend homeowners use products labeled as weed and feed as these products offer absolutely no control over where the chemical goes. You don’t want to throw weed control in areas where there are no weeds present.

You should look to spot spray weeds using a pump sprayer. Mix concentrated weed product with water and only put it where necessary.

Finally we need to think about the icing on this lawn cake. You are definitely going to want to lay down some iron. Iron for the lawn turns in that dark blue color that your neighbors will envy. On top of that, let’s be sure to throw in some insect treatment for the grubs and cinche bugs, as well as a fungal treatment for the late spring to top it all off. Now you are cooking!

I guess that’s about it you guys. We are all set as long as the snow stops sometime soon. Just remember, you need quality fertilizers, easy to apply liquid weed killer and some iron and insect control and you are good to go. Lawn care is fun and rewarding when you apply these simple tips!
