One of the fun parts of owning a computer is, of course, access to the internet. The worldwide web is chock full of useful information, readily available at your fingertips! It is also home to potentially lethal viruses, many of which can wreak havoc on your system within moments. The following four programs can help you avoid trouble; best of all they are absolutely free.

1. Mozilla Firefox - Mozilla is a fantastic browser. If you’re using Firefox you don’t know what you’re missing. It is absolutely the best browser available today. Did I mention it’s free? What else do you need?

2. Spybot Search and Destroy - this software gets rid of adware, spyware, and other junky software. Spybot blocks the installation of spyware before it occurs; this is not a replacement for antivirus software. It’s just a way to make your overall computer more secure.

3. AVG Antvirus - AVG offers basic antivirus protection. This is not the best virus protection program out there, but it is very good. For the price it might be the best. If nothing else, if you’re in a pinch and you think you have a virus. They can help you out of a jam and get your computer cleaned up.

4. Zone Alarm - if you’re on the Internet your computer needs a firewall. Period. End of discussion. Modern versions of Windows do come with a firewall, but it is not what some would consider completely adequate. It is better than nothing, but that’s about it. If you don’t have a firewall installed, you should really try the software.

5. Notepad++ - the notepad that comes with your computer does read text files, but that’s about all it does. After decades, Microsoft still hasn’t improved their software. Then again, at least they haven’t broke it right? If you are hankering for a much better version of notepad. You really deserve to try the software. You don’t know what you’re missing.

6. OpenOffice.org - working with Microsoft Office documents no longer meanst that you have to buy a copy of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel or Powerpoint. OpenOffice.org works with all of the popular Microsoft formats as well as the newly popular Open Document formats.

It is also important to remember that while you can pay for software. You don’t always have to. There are many fantastic free programs available that can solve many of the problems that need to be solved on your computer. That being said, sometimes the paid version is the best version and is most certainly worth the money.
