Drum Sets: How to Buy Share/Save/Bookmark

If your child decides that he or she wants to study how to become a drummer, and if you agree, it looks like you will have to make the decision to get a good deal on a drum set. Children often want to play an instrument like the drums because it is fun, noisy, but they have precise and exact rhythm if they want to play drums correctly. If you want to buy a drum set you should look at some facts before you even make the purchase.

For the absolute beginner, drum sets are pretty basic as they contain a snare drum, bass drum, and two mounted tom-toms. Most students can purchase cymbals later as they are not absolutely required for the beginners. Cymbals are usually made by different manufacturers than drums, so that is why they are not included in the beginner’s drum set.

Cymbal kits usually start with a couple of 14-inch cymbals, a 16-inch “crash” cymbal, and a 20-inch cymbal. You can also buy them separately and make sure you know what the sound is for each individual cymbal. As you or your child get better at drumming, you can get more sophisticated with a complete cymbal set later on.

To purchase your cymbals, find a reputable cymbal manufacturer such Paiste, Sabian, and Zildjian. You’ll also need the hardware for the drum set, and keep in mind that some drum sets include the hardware but some cases you’ll have to buy hardware separately. This is the “frame” of the drum set, meaning the stands, pedals and drum seat.

If your child will be taking lessons, you will have to purchase a drum set. Keep in mind that you can purchase a lower price drum set if you are not sure if your child will stay with the drum lessons. Another option is to check out Internet specials from websites and music shops in your local area to look at the price range of drum sets and for names of drum instructors.

The drum seat is specially constructed so as to absorb the impact of the drumming and support you or your child properly as you drum. Using a kitchen chair or some other type of seat isn’t going to do the job right. Invest in a proper drum seat, even if it’s used, so as to make sure you’re both comfortable and safe when you drum.

To be on the safe side, you may want to buy a refurbished or used drum set in case you child loses interest in playing drums. Most people can locate what they want through word of mouth, other parents, on the web with online auction websites or checking out ads in the Sunday paper. There are many great deals if you do your research properly and don’t buy the first drum set that you see.

If you’re buying this for your child and you’re not sure it’s a hobby he or she is going to stick with, you may be better off buying a used drum set. In addition, you can find some very good used drum sets that have had very little use at good prices, too. You can simply look in the classifieds and various Internet ad or auction sites to find a good set at a very reasonable price.
