It used to be that if you wanted to sell something, you could go to a car boot sale, or try to sell it to your friends and family, but now, there are hundreds, or even thousands of online marketplaces available to you.
But because there are so many different options available to you, it is extremely important that you choose the correct marketing strategies. If you place your advert in the wrong section, or a website which does not attract enough, or the right type of visitor, then all your hard work could be wasted.
Are you selling things because you need the space at home? Do you need to de-clutter? You need to decide how it will be sold. Will you deliver it, can you post it? Do you want the buyer to come and collect it? Free classifieds are perfect for all these options. But did you know that you can also advertise your own websites or services? It is probably a good idea to have a look at a few sites to see which one is the best for you.
Online auctions are fine but you have to have patience. You list your item in one place and then wait and see if anyone bids. You might not get the price you want but you still have to wait a week or so to see if you have sold your item. If you place an advert online, firstly you can place it in many different places at once. You could even list on hundreds of different websites if you wish. And it is possible that someone could even phone you the same day and you could have a sale there and then.
Choose carefully. If your local paper has a classifieds section, then it may be possible that they have an online version. Or is there a website about your local area you could use? If you have a service or are doing website promotion, of course, then the possibilities are unlimited. Many internationally well-known websites such as eBay and Craigslist allow you to post free adverts. You get to reach your perfect target audience and what is more, it is completely free!
One thing to remember is don’t be like my friend Doreen. She placed an advert using her own personal email address and got hundreds of emails from people she had never heard of! She told me never to use my own address. She said to always set up another account and then to use that.
Actually, I have never been happier. I sold lots of things using classified adverts. I wrote a clear description of my things and included a phone number or email address so that people can contact me. I always look at other adverts for the same things to see how much other people are selling their stuff for and put my stuff on for roughly the same amount. And then I sit back and wait for the cash to roll in!
