You can find anything from a wedding dress to a lost dog in the free Classified Ads. Free Classified Ads have been around for centuries. “Classified” means divided into different classes. Ad of course means advisement.
A stone was found in Pompeii with writing on it. It is assumed that the writing on it was an advertisement for the community and is the first documented ad. Maybe advertisement went even farther back in history. The cavemen put figures on cave rock. Maybe they were advertisement too. It was not until the 15th century that written notes were placed in public areas for advertisement.
Most communities have a weekly paper besides their town paper. In some communities it is called the shopper and you can place free classified ads there. Each paper covers a large district of towns close to one another. There are some odd postings sometimes.
With the introduction of the Internet, free advertising is highly desirable for people building web sites. If you want to advertise in some free ad papers, some insist that you place your ad on the Internet too. You still see advertisements in public places posted up on boards or walls in grocery stores, schools, bars and churches.
There are still local call in radio ads for people to buy or sell their treasures. There can be some strange things people sell and people buy them too. Everybody needs 25 ice cream buckets right?
The first commercial advertisements on the Internet were in 2000. To get on the Internet you had to be sponsored. It was difficult for the seller to advertise their product. Not long after that, the Internet became a big shopping store. There are thousands of web sites selling products. You may get some free advertising for a short amount of time after which you will have pay for it.
There is also Craig’s list that will advertise anything. Craig’s list has everything and all the ad posts are free. Craig Newmark was brainiac that started this site. Craig’s list evolved in 1995 and it soon became very popular when the news spread that you could get free advertising. At first Craig’s list advertised social event and local Industries in San Francisco. Craig’s initial intention for the site was for it to be a mailing list.
Internet Marketers often partner up and will have their partner’s ad on their web site thus gaining residual income when someone buys something from your partner’s business. The first ad words sale was for “live mail order lobsters”.
Google engineers developed Ad Words. Ad Words enables marketers to get people to their site. If you start with a business you can get some free ads in the beginning of your product launch; but after that you will have to pay for it. There are many free classified sites on the Internet to check out.
Another kind of de facto advertising is Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia on line. You can find information about everything. It is kind of a copycat of “Nu pedia” and Wikipedia quickly took over this venue. Wikipedia is global and in several languages. A few places for free classified ads still remain and are widely utilized; especially on the Internet.
