What is the price of a new sewing machine? You can get a machine for under a hundred dollars or you can pay up to $12,000.

There is a wide range of sewing machines available today. You can get cheap junk, solid mechanicals, electronic, or computerized machines. Like most things in this world, you must pay for value, features, and dependability.

What are the different sewing machine brands?

Generic means general or standard. Brands like Kenmore, Necchi, Bernette, Simplicity, and White brands are general sewing machines manufactured and supplied to the marketing company with the specified generic label.

The very popular newcomer, Baby Lock, offers the finest sergers as well as a premium line of sewing machines. Tacony Corporation and Brother International enjoy a great joint venture relationship yielding superior quality production in Japan.

The consumer electronics giant, Brother International, markets two brand lines. The Brother line is a low end product line sold through Walmart and other mass merchants. The Pacesetter By Brother line is a top quality line sold through independent dealers. It also produces standard machines for generic brands.

Bernina is the luxury sewing machine made in Switzerland. Customer loyalty is the highest in the industry. It is famous for its solid dependability, advanced features, and innovation. It has been a leader in the industry introducing the first zig zag, hem machine, and Microsoft Windows operating system. Its newest model 830 has the largest stitch offering on the market, measures 12 arm, and is full of advanced features. The cost is $12,000.

The Elna brand was recently purchased by Janome of Japan. It will continue to be its own disctinctive brand line reflecting the femine styling of the Swiss, but manufactured and marketed by Janome.

Husqavarna Viking originally from Sweden became famous for its resilience and ease of use. Now it is part of the conglomerate including Singer and Pfaff being manufactured in China.

Formerly, the New Home brand was marketed in the United States. Today Janome of Japan is the largest of all sewing machine manufacturers boasting over 50,000,000 machines made. The Memory Craft series has been very popular because of the advanced robotic incorporated in the stitch control system. The company makes many generic sewing machine lines for other companies.

In 1862, Georg Michael Pfaff introduced his German sewing machine. Over the years, it has developed a reputation for high quality premium sewing machines. Currently the Pfaff brand continues to enjoy German engineering, while being manufactured in China.

During the earliest days of the sewing machine there were two key players, Elias Howe who patented his machine in 1846, and Isaac Merritt Singer. After the patent court battles were over, Howe held the patent, but Singer held the market. Within a decade, Howes company faded, but I.M. Singer & Company thrived for over a hundred years dominating the market. His efforts resulted in the first lockstitch sewing machine patent. In recent years, Singer has been sold and resold. Currently, it is manufactured in China. The Singer brand is the best known brand in the world.
