I decided that this past summer, I was going to enroll my daughter in swimming lessons. She was three years old at the time and perfectly capable of learning what needs to be learned. With that decision having been made, I began my quest of finding swimming lessons that would suit her age. I quickly discovered that all of our local community centers and pools cater more to stay at home mothers. Unfortunately, I work full-time during the week. My daytime working hours do not allow for her to take swimming lessons around lunchtime several days a week. I was actually pretty surprised that more classes were not on Saturdays or in the evenings. I wasn’t sure if I should be offended by that discovery or not.
Because I am not so rich and I work long hours to provide for my family, the suggestions others gave to me regarding private swimming lessons for my kid were not suitable for my budget. Yes, they had swimming lessons that I could get my schedule around, but the amount of cash they were asking was simply nothing I could get my wallet around. To give you an idea about the cost, it would have been more than double the money I should have paid for group swimming lessons. So I resumed my quest.
I asked several other mothers in my neighborhood what they had done for their child’s swimming lessons. That was a big mistake - I had forgotten that all of my neighbors only had one working parent. They treated me like I had the plague. So, I called the local community center and questioned them about what they recommended. To my surprise and delight, they had decided to form Saturday swimming lessons for people in my predicament. It would cost a small amount more but would still be affordable and cheaper than private swimming lessons. I signed her up immediately.
My boy was very excited that he would take part to swimming lessons. I prepared him in advance and all the family took part in his excitement. I really hoped that it will work just great for him as he was already waiting for a long time to catch up with all the youngsters in our family, used to splashing water around in the pool, at our family gatherings. I was happy that I would not have to watch all the time over him to not fall into the water, during such occasions.
The first day of her swimming lessons arrived and she was hyper. She looked absolutely adorable in her new bathing suit. As the instructor called the class into the water signaling the start of swimming lessons, she tentatively joined them. Whenever she looked over her shoulder to see if I was there, I waved back happily. Swimming lessons turned out to be wonderful for her. She not only made new friends but she did gain quite a bit of confidence. It was amazing to me how her confidence quickly led to my own confidence. All thanks to Saturday swimming lessons.
