If you’ve been watching the news recently, you will quickly realize how bad the economy is right now. And just as we’re worrying about our money, we’re hit with the three most expensive holidays sea

Are you ready to save some money? It’s easy. All you have to do is create your own homemade Halloween costume. This not only allows you to save tons of money, it also gives you the chance to have an awesome family activity. Go for it!

Now if you’re like me, you’re probably not the most creative person in the world. That’s ok. Here’s some great suggestions to help you start thinking about how you can make a very easy homemade Halloween costume.

Start digging through your clothes closet. Can you find an old dress? Contratulations! You’ve just found your Cinderella costume for your daughter. Came across an old suit and tie? Your son just became the newest computer geek on the block! Digging a little further may enable you to turn your child into a hippie or gypsy.

Many costumes require little more than a headband and a hot glue gun. If you have those two items at home, look around your house for items to start gluing on. If you have some tulle, a doily, lace, or any piece of fabric, you can make a veil. Add flowers to really ‘fancy it up’. After doing all of that, cut some felt pieces and glue them on to make ears (bunny ears, cat ears, dog ears, or any other animal you can imagine). You can even quickly make antennae to be an alien or bug by simply gluing some pipe cleaners onto a headband.

Do have a white sweatsuit lying around (that you don’t mind ruining for a good cause)? Use it to turn your child into a cow or Dalmatian. All you have to do is use a black marker and draw spots all over the sweatsuit. Don’t forget to put a big black spot on your kid’s nose! In fact, you could even complete the costume by using a headband with some animal’s ears glued to them.

How about going to your local furniture store and asking for a large box? Cut a hole on two opposite sides of the box for your child’s arms, and a hole in the top of the box for his head. Draw a TV screen on the front of the box, and glue a few buttons on there for the TV controls, and you’ve got a great little TV going out trick or treating. For an added touch, add two plastic straws to a headband, and now he has a TV antennae!

Here’s another suggestion: after drawing computer screen to the front of a cardboard box, glue an old computer mouse on the top or to the side of the box. Or how about a washing machine? Cut open a piece of the box on the very front so that swings open and closed. Glue a piece of rope on to it for a handle. Go a step further and attach some kind of receptical (like a bag or pillow case) inside the box to receive all the candy that the people will put into your child’s “washing machine”!

As you can see, making your own homemade Halloween costume can be both fun and economical. With a little creativity, and by using items you already have around the house, you can soon create a costume that will be loved and adored by all of your child’s friends.
