Many successful blog owners have chosen a niche in which they know something about or have passion about. Rare is the blog owner who has jumped into a niche they knew nothing about and have been successful. Sure, we all have a passion for money, but that alone doesn’t qualify any of us as experts. The successful blogger will search his or her interest to find a profitable niche and then dominate that niche for every penny it’s worth!

What I’ll be trying to do here is to get you thinking outside the box when choosing a profitable niche. I’ll show you that it doesn’t matter if you’re a new blogger to the Internet or a seasoned pro. My tactics will allow you to search out profitable niches in any field.

Categorizing Your Interest

The advantage of starting out with something you’re knowledgeable and passionate about is that you’ll have plenty of ideas to blog about. One of the biggest failing points for bloggers is finding something to continually blog about. This is why it’s important to choose something you know and have interest in. It doesn’t matter all that much what the niche is. Perhaps you love to Cook, sew, work with wood, play Soccer or watch professional football. Any of these niches can be profitable. If you’re truly passionate about a subject, you’re more likely to turn out interesting and informative articles. This will keep the traffic to your blog coming in, thus making your niche a profitable one.

Do not get discouraged if your interest is not a wildly popular one. As long as you dominate your niche, you can be profitable. If the niche you choose isn’t a hugely popular one, then start another blog on another interest of yours. I have a friend who blogs about working on his Muscle Cars. With the price of gas these days, you’d think there wouldn’t be much interest. But on an average day his blog receiveds over 2000 unique visitors. His income from this blog is about $1300 per month and steadily climbing. Did he start the blog to make money? No. He started it because he likes working on old cars and wanted to share his knowledge with others. This is the secret of successful blogging!

Learning About Your Competition

Now that you have your interest written down, go to the search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN and search for other blogs on your interest. Take note of the quantity of blogs on your subject and their quality. This will tell you whether or not your subject is already saturated with bloggers. Chances are its not, but you must first do this little part of research in order to determine the amount of competition and whether they are dominating your niche subject or not.

Deciding What the Purpose of Your Blog Should Be

Another consideration the potential new blogger needs to consider is the purpose of the blog. Blogs are created everyday for one reason or another. Maybe someone’s ticked off at a company and starts a negative blog about the company. Perhaps an activist starts a blog to recruit other like minded people to their cause. Those are all well and fine. However, if you’re starting a blog to make income from, you’ll want to first make sure there is enough interest in your niche to drive traffic to your blog. Without traffic, you’ll just be blogging to be blogging!

With that being said, it’s very important a new blogger choose an interest that is capable of driving traffic to their blog. The subject should be somewhat popular or broad enough where your message can reach a large audience. If you’ve chosen an interest of yours that you have knowledge in and are passionate about, then this step will be rather easy for you.
