Rockband 2, the newest party game on the block has been released! But does it measure up to its predecessor?
The game, developed by Harmonix, is the latest addition to the growing genre of music simulation games, has recently been released for the XBOX 360 (soon to be released on the Playstation 2 & 3 and Wii).
What’s new to Rockband 2?
Players already familiar with the original game will notice that Harmonix did not do much to alter the basic gameplay. Rockband 2 does, however, offer several new additions to the basic game, including a brand new song list, new game modes and new game features.
Rockband 2’s main attraction is undoubtedly its new song repertoire. 84 new songs await players to unlock and rock out to, including a Guns N’ Roses song from their unreleased album, as well as a list of songs that players can download. Harmonix has also made it possible to import and play songs from the original game by choosing the ‘Export Songs’ option in the original Rockband’s menu.
Rockband 2 also introduces some slight modifications to its gameplay, including small changes to specific instruments and the introduction of new game modes.
The introduction of the ‘No Fail’ mode lets those who want to play a song do so without the chance of failing it. Although it’s only available in Quickplay, the mode provides a nice break for those wishing to play a casual party game or who have small children who aren’t as adept at playing as their older counterparts.
Rockband 2 also brings changes to the Tour mode, most notably that any number of players can start a band and begin touring. The game, unlike its predecessor, require a band leader, allowing players to switch instruments throughout the tour.
Harmonix doesn’t seek to revolutionize any gaming conventions with this latest release. This sequel is simply a continuation of an already proven game genre, providing players with new songs, modified gameplay, increased difficulty, and new modes. The game itself is a fun addition to the Rockband franchise, and should provide lots of enjoyable gameplay for seasoned fans and new players alike.
