One of the dreaded problems with laptops is if the LCD is busted or cracked. Should you throw in the towel and get a new one or get it fixed?
Many people will tell you that it’s not cost effective to replace the LCD screen. However, that’s not always the case. Rather than just replacing the laptop completely, with a little research and planning you can find that replacing the LCD screen can be a very cost effective repair.
The major cost of a significant amount of laptops is the LCD screen, although that price is rapidly dropping. Replacement screens can cost from between $150 and $325. With only the largest, most extravagant screens costing significantly more.
Of course it all depends on where you are buying your replacement from. Many computer repair services have inside connections that can save you hundreds of dollars. In our computer repair company we can usually get quotes for replacement LCD’s much cheaper than Ebay or any other common source that consumers use.
Once you have your LCD screen, you’ll actually have to have it replaced. Because taking apart the computer and replacing the screen is actually dealing with a very, very delicate part, it makes sense to find a competent repair person who can replace it for you.
What you’ll find if you use a computer repair technician who has experience in laptop repairs, is that they’ll usually be able to complete the repair in an hour or less. Because each model is different, there are tens of thousands of variations of design and implementation, so your mileage may vary.
If you do decide to replace the screen yourself, there are numerous sites that list detailed schematics of how to take apart the screen for each manufacturer and model. A simple google search of laptop repair guides should help.
As with all computer repairs, you have to weigh the cost of the repairs with effective replacement costs of the entire computer. As most LCD repairs cost at least $300 with labor, if you can replace the computer for about double that price you might not want to proceed. However, it’s hard to put a dollar value on the customizations you have on your computer already. A new computer might not have the programs you need, or your internet bookmarks. So, take that into consideration as well. Good luck with your laptop revival, and email us if you have any questions.
