Deciding on a Chihuahua as your family pet is a great move and one of the first things you are going to want to do is familiarize yourself with Chihuahua health problems so that you know what to look for and you know what is healthy behavior and what is unhealthy behavior for your Chihuahua. It takes time to get to understand what they mean with their body language and when they are showing symptoms of something serious, so get to know these symptoms so you can identify them if they come up.
Before you bring your Chihuahua home have a long talk with your vet about what health issues to expect from your new dog and also discuss identifying the symptoms. If you have normal behavior explained to you and then you are given the warning signs to look for you are better equipped to help your dog should something happen. Some Chihuahua health problems arise at birth and some develop over time but you should always be watching for any symptoms your dog may display. A common Chihuahua health problem is the inability of the material on the leg and around the knee to hold the kneecap in place. This causes the kneecap to float in and out of place and can become extremely painful for your dog. If you notice a problem with your dog’s ability to walk get them to the vet right away.
Another common Chihuahua health problem is that for the males their testicles do not drop and they need a vet to look at them. A normal Chihuahua male will have their testicles drop from their abdomen almost from birth or certainly by the time they reach adulthood. If this has not happened then contact your vet right away, as your Chihuahua will need medical attention for this condition.
Chihuahua health problems can be quite serious but sometimes difficult to detect. One problem that is almost exclusive to the Chihuahua is very difficult to see in the beginning stages and get quite serious if untreated.
Fluids go back and forth from the brain to the body in any animal and in the Chihuahua these fluids can sometimes get blocked causing a swelling around the brain and severe discomfort for the dog. This can usually be found with regular appointments to the vet but if you notice your dog behaving strangely then get it to the vet right away.
A Chihuahua is like any other toy breed of dog in that it can sometimes develop crystal in their urine that can block up their system and cause major problems. Some conditions are exclusive to a Chihuahua and won’t show up in any other breed.
So keep an eye on your Chihuahua and make sure you take them to the vet on a regular basis.
